Today Wikipedia ... tomorrow the world.

Costello story prompts review of ABC editorial policies.

The ABC will review its editorial policies in response to a story involving Federal Treasurer Peter Costello.

ABC TV’s The 7:30 Report last week reported on a dinner where Mr Costello allegedly discussed a future leadership challenge.

The facts of the dinner and whether the conversation was off the record are in dispute.

ABC managing director Mark Scott says reporters need better guidance about background conversations.

“We are being very open and transparent around this process,” he said.

“We are not being defensive. We have outlined on our website in detail where we thought there was a factual error, where there are matters that are in dispute, and we’ve identified where our editorial policies are silent where they don’t need to be silent.”

Managing director Mark Scott advised that the firm, Crosby, Textor and Goebbels will be issuing their report on the new guidelines as soon as anybody left standing can say Jack Robinson - or Commissioner Keith Windshuttle ... preferably.
